Canyon has the privilege of sponsoring both Jan Frodeno and Patrick Lange, who own the last four years of World Championship titles. They have worked to refine the front end of their bikes, developing custom versions of their extensions and bottles for their champions. Here at TriRig, we are absolutely obsessed with front ends, and we have loved watching the evolution of the bars for Frodo and Lange. Here is the current version of each cockpit, on display at the Canyon booth at Ironman Village.

Jan Frodeno's Front End
Of the two front ends, this one has the most new stuff for 2019. Frodeno has had several generations of custom front ends from Canyon, designed to minimize frontal area. They began a few years ago for his 'Project 740' in his attempt to break 7 hours 40 minutes at the Ironman distance, and eventually became a standard production version now available to consumers. His new front end for 2019 is a whole new beast. It fills in all the area between his arms, and mates with the under surface of his arms to create a unitary aerodynamic form. It's quite beautiful, but assumes the rider is completely locked into the position and needs zero adjustment. This trend mimics that of the Speedbar-type extension, which trades adjustability for aero gains.
Patrick Lange's Front End
Lange's cockpit appears to be unchanged from the one we detailed last year, although this time around we get to see it without padding. It's unclear whether last year's rig was 3D-printed titanium, as some other online videos suggested. But this year it very much appears to be made of carbon fiber, meaning Canyon invested in a complete mold just to make this one-off structure for their defending champion. The padding used last year was just simple EVA foam, not necessarily the best choice, but it seems like it works well enough for Lange, who owns the Kona course record and is the only winner in history to break eight hours here!
