Recently, I've gotten a lot of questions as to how you might add top tube storage bosses to a bike that wasn't built with them. The answer is simple: Rivnuts! In this article I go through exactly how to use and install these beautiful little fasteners, and the video tutorial makes it very clear how the whole operation should go. Enjoy!

Rivnuts + Tools

Here's the business: all the shots of Rivnuts and the installation tools used for this mod. We've included some shots of Rivnuts installed onto a carbon sheet (and one of a squashed Rivnut installed onto nothing), so you can see what the underside will look like after you've done this to your own bike.

  • A handful of M5 Rivnuts, the correct size for our storage bosses.
  • Here's a Rivnut from the opposite side - how it will look on the inside of your bike.
  • Here's a Rivnut from the opposite side - how it will look on the inside of your bike.
  • And here's a Rivnut after it's been squashed. Normally it would be pinching something between those two flanges (in the case of this tutorial, my top tube).
  • This is the Westward 5TUW4, which is my Rivnut tool of choice. I used the Astro 1442 for the video, but this one is a lot easier to use.
  • The Westward comes with four mandrels, quite easy to use and giving you all the bits you'll need for bike work.
  • Using the Westward is really easy - you just screw the mandrel into the back ...
  • ... then screw the stopper piece to the front. Good to go!
  • The Astro 1442 is another Rivnut installer, but I prefer the Westward for its simplicity, ease of use, and mandrel set.
