25,245 These are the new Red brakes. They are beautiful specimens, but I didn't include them on my test bike. SRAM added some features designed to reduce the frontal area and slim down the brakes, but they retain the same essence as a standard sidepull mechanism that hangs cable out in the wind.
The new SRAM Red group was released earlier this year, and has been a surprise on a few levels. SRAM addressed all the major complaints that had been levied against its previous flagship group, cut out a significant amount of weight, and introduced a novel front shifting mechanism called YAW. But they didn't do what many have been waiting for them to do - go electric. The drivetrain remains mechanical, but can it survive in a world that has largely gone battery-powered?
