Chris McCormack is ready to make some fireworks. After taking a hiatus from Ironman to focus on an unsuccessful Olympic bid, the two-time Ironman champ is back with a vengence. What's amazing from an equipment perspective is the fact that his main rival, Craig Alexander, is now riding the same bike he is. Although the two have some different choices in wheels, aerobars, and drivetrains, they'll be on the same Specialized Shiv chassis, reducing any potential equipment-related aerodynamic advantages. For the last five years, one of these two men has won Ironman Hawaii. They've shut out everyone else. And now they're back, both on their Shivs, ready to blow up the field. This should be interesting, to say the least.

  • Macca is riding a position very similar to the one he had in 2010. He's sitting back at about 76 degrees, fairly low up front but not as aggressive as someone like Sebastian Kienle. He's said in the past that he goes for a more comfortable position rather than the most aggressive one.
  • Here's another angle where it's a little easier to see exactly what his position looks like. Although it's not ultra-low, he still can't use the integrated Shiv bar, which has a LOT of stack height.
  • We caught up with Macca doing a motorpace session on the Queen K.
  • Macca loves the camera, and was only too happy to smile and give us a 'Hang Ten' sign.
  • The two-time World Champ is all smiles. He looks very fit and ready to rock.
  • Macca is using a Profile Design CX3 bar and a negative-rise stem to hit his position - he can't hit it with the S-Works bar, which has a lot of extra stack height. That's one of my gripes about the Shiv - it's super tall. Most pros on the new Shiv have had to resort to third-party aerobar hardware to achieve their positions. This includes Macca, Crowie, and Ben Hoffman, just to name a few.
  • Despite a fairly visible cable cluster, the bike is setup pretty tidy. It might not be the ode to minimalism Macca rode in 2010 on the original Shiv, but it's bound to serve him well on Saturday.
  • Macca looks focused and ready to go.
  • McCormack's motorpacing session keeps him on pace and in the zone.

  • Here's Macca's front end. He's still rocking the BTA, but now adds the Fuelselage straw that goes to the Shiv's internal bladder.
